Beam and plate shoring

Beam and Plate Shoring Contractor | Deep Excavation Services

RedClay Excavation is a trusted beam and plate shoring contractor serving commercial, municipal, and industrial clients throughout the US. We specialize in deep excavation shoring for complex below-grade projects, including underground storage tank excavation, trench shoring, and large utility installations.

When groundwater conditions are present, Redclay Excavating delivers large-scale dewatering solutions to maintain stable, dry, and safe excavation environments. Our team executes all shored and deep excavation work in accordance with engineered plans, geotechnical recommendations, and applicable safety standards to ensure project integrity and performance.

Constrained Site Solutions

Shored & Deep Excavation

Redclay Excavating's shored excavation services provide the ideal solution for constrained sites where traditional benched or sloped excavation methods are not feasible. Our engineered shoring systems allow for safe, efficient excavation in tight or restricted environments.

We support a wide range of deep excavation applications, including underground fuel storage tanks, water treatment plant lift stations, utility installations, and deep foundation systems — all performed in accordance with engineered designs, geotechnical recommendations, and applicable safety standards.

Method 01

Beam & Plate Shoring

Redclay Excavating provides beam and plate shoring systems for deep excavation projects of all sizes — engineered solutions tailored to project-specific conditions, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant excavation support.

  • Pre-construction review of shoring plans and geotechnical recommendations
  • Layout and installation of soldier beams (H-piles or wide flange sections)
  • Excavation in controlled lifts between shoring elements
  • Installation of timber or steel lagging plates per design requirements
  • Temporary excavation support for utilities, foundations, and structures
  • Monitoring of excavation stability and shoring performance
  • Compliance with OSHA excavation and trench safety requirements
  • Backfill, compaction, and documentation for inspection and acceptance
  • Pre-construction review of project plans, geotechnical reports, and shoring requirements
  • Design coordination and layout of slide rail shoring systems
  • Controlled excavation within the slide rail system in incremental lifts
  • Accommodation of varying soil conditions and groundwater levels
  • Coordination with geotechnical engineers and third-party inspectors
  • Excavation adjacent to existing utilities, structures, and roadways
  • Removal of slide rail system or cut-off per project requirements
  • Backfill and compaction following shoring removal

Method 02

Slide Rail Shoring

Redclay Excavating offers slide rail shoring systems for deep excavation projects of all sizes, delivering safe, efficient, and compliant excavation support tailored to project-specific site conditions.

The Basics

What Is Beam & Plate Shoring?

Beam and plate shoring is a site-specific excavation support system that uses wide flange steel beams and heavy-gauge shoring plates to stabilize trench walls and protect workers during deep excavations. As a leading beam and plate shoring contractor, Redclay Excavating designs and installs these systems to meet the exact demands of each project — whether that means navigating tight urban sites, irregular footprints, or challenging soil conditions.

Unlike benching or sloping, a beam and plate system allows excavation to proceed in constrained areas where there simply isn't room to grade back the soil. Wide flange beams are driven into the ground at set intervals, and steel or timber lagging plates are installed horizontally between them as excavation progresses in controlled lifts.

The result is a rigid, engineered shored excavation that keeps crews and equipment safe at depth, often down to 36 feet or more, while leaving the work area fully open and unobstructed.

Questions

Beam & Plate Shoring FAQ

Beam and plate shoring systems can support excavations well beyond standard trench depths. Redclay Excavating routinely installs beam and plate systems reaching 20 to 36 feet, depending on soil conditions and the engineered design. For projects exceeding standard depths, we coordinate directly with geotechnical engineers to ensure the system is designed for the specific site.
The biggest advantage of a beam and plate system is the free-span work area it creates. Because wide flange beam shoring supports trench walls from the perimeter, crews and equipment can move freely inside the excavation without brace struts blocking access — making it especially efficient for underground storage tank excavation, lift station construction, and large utility installations.
Beam and plate shoring is the preferred choice when a site is too constrained for sloped or benched excavation, when the excavation footprint is irregular, or when a large unobstructed work area is needed at the bottom of the trench. It's also commonly paired with slide rail shoring or dewatering systems on complex projects. Your Redclay Excavating project manager can help determine the right approach for your site conditions.
Yes. All beam and plate shoring installations by Redclay Excavating are performed in full compliance with OSHA excavation and trench safety requirements. We follow engineered shoring plans, geotechnical recommendations, and applicable trench safety shoring standards on every project, and maintain documentation to support third-party inspections and final acceptance.
